Hip-Hop’s Finest Are Auctioning Off Their Jewels
26-Sep-2008
Written by: Alexandra Perich

Want to own a piece of your favorite hip-hop star’s jewelry? You can get your chance at owning a signature piece at the Hip-Hop’s Crown Jewels auction from the contemporary art auction house Phillips de Pury & Company, March 5 in New York.

According to MTV.com, a spokesperson would not discuss what pieces will be in the auction catalog because it is still being finalized. However, Lil Jon’s 12-pound “Crunk Aint Dead” pendant, which holds the Guinness Book of World Records mark as the largest diamond pendant ever, containing more than 3,700 diamonds, will be auctioned off. Reportedly, Missy Elliot’s black diamond and gold mini turntable pendant, Diddy’s diamond and platinum bracelet, and one of Kanye West’s diamond studded black Jesus pendants will also be auctioned.

The Washington Post reported that other items expected to go under the gavel include a mix of pieces donated by the artists themselves and their jewelers. Pieces include MC Lyte’s gold mushroom-shaped ring with a profile of Nefertiti, Biz Markie’s signature diamond-studded cassette pendant, a diamond-dusted Rolex that belonged to the late Notorious B.I.G., and a diamond link bracelet owned by 50 Cent that was reportedly written up as “so bloated with diamonds that wearing it would be akin to hoisting a five-pound barbell all day.”

Part of the proceeds will benefit the National Museum of American History’s drive to establish a permanent hip-hop exhibit and Russell Simmons’s Rush Community Affairs charity, the Washington Post reported.
