Kellie Pickler Admits to Battling Depression
8-Oct-2008
Written by: Jessica McCumber

The singer bounces back after a year of dealing with her breakup, depression, and family problems.

You would never know it by her pearly white ear-to-ear smile in photographs, but 22-year-old Kellie Pickler didn’t have much to smile about last year.

In the new edition of People magazine, the former American Idol contestant admitted to having suffered from a yearlong depression, which led to some nasty reactions to anti-depressants, reports People.com.

"Everything in my professional life seemed great," Pickler told People. "But in my personal life, I was just crumbling."

For starters, the country singer went through a painful breakup with her then boyfriend, Jordin Tootoo.

To make matters worse, the mother who abandoned Pickler when she was only 2, resurfaced just as her father, who was convicted of a felony and released just after her time on Idol, went back to jail.

With so much going on in her life, it's no wonder she says, "I was an emotional wreck."

As icing on the cake, she told People the anti-depressants that were supposed to help her made her “crazy” and that she had to quit taking them because of the side effects.

Where can a girl turn in a time of need? Why, friends and fellow singers Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood of course! Pickler gave credit to friends and writing songs for her new CD (released in Sept.) for getting her through the tough time.

There is also a new man in her life, songwriter Kyle Jacobs. She told People, "He makes me feel so good about being me."

Wedding bells are not being heard, though, as Pickler says she is not ready for marriage. However, she did share her dreams of a future family, telling People, "I've always wanted to adopt."

That will be far ahead in the future, though, as she adds, "I wouldn't do it right now. I definitely have to get my priorities together first."
