New Playboy Biography Features Life of Hefner
12-Oct-2008

The latest biography of Hugh Hefner offers history of the man behind the legend, but no bombshells.
Playboy entrepreneur Hugh Hefner is offering his life story on the bookshelves in a 500-page biography, entitled Mr. Playboy: Hugh Hefner and the American Dream, according to USA Today.
The authorized biography was written by Steven Watts, who has written the biographies for Walt Disney and Henry Ford. Watts admitted that he initially thought Hefner was “a party animal.” After getting to know Hefner, Watts said his perception of the Playboy owner changed.
“As I got to know him, it was clear that he was, in the Jay Gatsby tradition, very much in control,” Watts said.
As Hefner’s personal life has been tabloid fodder for decades, Watts’s biography offers no bombshells or revelations about Hefner. Instead, the book takes an in-depth look at Hefner’s accomplishments through the Playboy empire.
The book also sheds light on the roots of the bunny mascot. Hefner had a childhood love of animals and the mascot comes from a bunny-themed blanket he gave to a lost puppy that died.
The biography also says that despite Hefner’s self-proclaimed repressed childhood, his mother was one of the initial investors for the Playboy magazine.
The book was released earlier this week nationwide.
