Michael J. Fox Inspires Ryan Reynolds to Run Marathon
12-Oct-2008
Written by: Marissa Willman

Actor Ryan Reynolds will run a marathon in New York City in honor of actor Michael J. Fox and Reynolds’s father, Jim, who both battle Parkinson’s disease.

After meeting with actor Michael J. Fox, who suffers from Parkinson’s disease, fellow actor Ryan Reynolds will run in the New York City marathon on Nov. 2.

Reynolds said on the Huffington Post that after meeting Fox, he was inspired to do something in the actor’s name.

“A year and a half ago, I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Michael J. Fox. Like so many before me, I found it impossible not to be touched by his story of overwhelming strength, passion and relentless commitment to help those afflicted with this insidious disease,” Reynolds wrote in an open letter to the Web site.

Reynolds will also be running in honor of his father, Jim, who also suffers from the disease.

“On behalf of my Father, Jim Reynolds, who’s spent the last 15 years in a life or death struggle with Parkinson’s Disease,” Reynolds said. “Witnessing my Dad suffer over the years galvanized my need to step up.”

Reynolds said he trains for the marathon daily, beginning at 4:30 a.m. each morning.

“Waking up at 4:30 a.m. and jogging anywhere from 11 to 23 miles has been nothing short of horrifying,” he said.

The 26-mile marathon will be held in New York City on Nov. 2.
