Actress Tina Fey's impressions of Alaska Governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin are so spot-on that Mrs. Palin has been quoted as saying ". . . what I should have told them [reporters] is, I was trying to keep Tina Fey in business. . . ." The resemblance between the two women is so uncanny that Gov. Palin is reported to have dressed up as Tina Fey for Halloween several years ago.
Miss Fey's impersonations of Gov. Palin have made her a household name, and boosted ratings for the 30-year-old sketch comedy show, Saturday Night Live. Gov. Palin is so enamored by the attention that she is considering guest starring on Saturday Night Live before the presidential election in November. The impersonations have been publicly lauded by Gov. Palin, and the McCain presidential campaign have said they enjoyed them as well.
While sentiment for the Palin sketches run high among people, many political analysts see it as the biggest hurdle to credibility Gov. Palin could possibly face. Of course, it is possible that credibility gap for Gov. Palin is due to how she has spoken in her interviews, rather than the parodies of her, which often quote her directly.
With five children, Gov. Palin has been vocal about how she is an average hockey mom, and lives a normal life. Public sentiment around how she has conducted herself and her teenage daughter’s pregnancy have made her ripe for public ridicule, and Miss Fey is no longer the only satirist earning fame from Sarah Palin humor.
Given that she is running for one of the highest political offices in the USA, it is not yet clear what impact this wave of Palin-inspired humor will have on voters, if at all.
