The NFL trade deadline for the 2008-09 season is finally over, and there have been some surprises. Some marquee players such as wide receiver Roy Williams and Kansas City perennial pro bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez were rumored to be traded to different teams. However, only one of those two players was traded. The Detroit Lions traded Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys. In addition, Dallas will receive a seventh round pick for the 2009 NFL draft from Detroit. The Lions will receive a first, third, and sixth round pick from the Cowboys. The suspension to Pacman (Adam) Jones for an altercation with a bodyguard was something that was a lingering thought in the Cowboys locker room. With the injuries to pro bowl quarter back Tony Romo and rookie running back Felix Jones, (Cowboys owner) Jerry Jones must have felt compelled to make this trade for Williams.

Williams can make some spectacular plays for Dallas, but at what cost. Was trading all of those draft picks the right decision for the Cowboys? At least on the bright side, Dallas ultimately has a true wide receiver that can complement the always mercurial Terrell Owens. TO has had difficulty with press coverage all season long. Maybe the Williams acquisition will alleviate some of that tension on Owens by having defenses shift their coverage towards Williams.

A team that was interested in Tony Gonzalez was the New York Giants, but the Giants' offer to the Chiefs was inadequate. According to the New York Daily News, the Chiefs wanted a better deal than just a sixth round pick. How will this play out for the remainder of the NFL season? Gonzales will remain in a Chiefs uniform until the end of the season; nevertheless he seemed as if the Chiefs organization betrayed him. It would not come as a shock if he was eventually traded in the off season.
