Patrick Swayze Talks Cancer and Working 12 Hours a Day

The 56-year-old says that working keeps his spirits up.
Okay, you’re Patrick Swayze, you have pancreatic cancer and your chips are down: What do you do to cheer yourself up?
According to People.com, the actor recently asked the same thing during his interview with the New York Times, asking, “How do you nurture a positive attitude when all the statistics say you’re a dead man?”
The answer was simple for Swayze, “You go to work.”
And work he has! Swayze has been in Chicago filming for the upcoming A&E series, The Beast, since this summer, and apparently things are going well.
“I do find myself, at the end of the day, riding home sort of catching myself with a smile on my face,” he admitted during the interview. “I’m proud of what I’m doing.”
The actor gave credit to his wife, Lisa Niemi, for being his support, but says the treatments have been tough, adding, “It’s a battle zone I go through.”
According to Swayze, there is nothing glamorous about chemo, as he said, “Chemo, no matter how you cut it, is hell on wheels.”
His health seems to be getting better, as he reported that he has even been able to regain 20 pounds with the use of “muscle-building shakes” and a 12 hour a day work schedule.
His cancer has helped to put things in perspective, and he has given a lot of thought to his goals for the future.
“I've made a pretty decent mark so far – nothing to scoff at,” admits Swayze. “But it does make you think: Wait a minute. There’s more I want to do. Lots more. Get on with it.”
