YouTube = Copycats
11-Nov-2008

YouTube decides to follow the steps of Hulu.
I finally see that YouTube, once a strong original Web site, has been bogged down by Google’s business tactics. Instead of heading to original ideas, they have decided to copy a little bit of Hulu’s thunder.
After making a partnership with MGM Worldwide Television, it will launch a video-on-demand channel. Shows will include '90s classic American Gladiators. I didn’t think people were demanding American Gladiators on YouTube.
Wait a second; Hulu has been doing legal videos with advertisement already. They even have a partnership with MGM, as well as Fox and NBC Universal. There is a degree of maturity with Hulu that isn’t on YouTube. There are no videos of people complaining about life, no stupid parodies, or music playing over an image.
If YouTube wants to be an entertainment destination, they have to do a few things. Music videos are a great way to differentiate from Hulu. Making strong contracts with artists to cross promote can produce strength. YouTube can also try to promote their Web-celebrities. One other option is that YouTube should work with Asian programming, since it seems like they always land on the top views.
YouTube has the advantage of having a large user-base. If the mass backs up YouTube, it will be a success. If there is a public outcry, I can see people going to other video Web sites.
