Idol Gives Back in a Big Way

American Idol give $64 million to charity.

According to the New York Times, American Idol has allocated more than $64 million in grants to six U.S. and international charities from contributions to its Idol Gives Back fund-raising event held in April.

Miley Cyrus, Fergie, Heart, and Snoop Dogg were some of the artists that performed at the event. Reese Witherspoon, Robin Williams, and Billy Crystal also appeared at the event. The money raised from the event will go to both national and international charities including the Global Fund to Fight Aids and the Children's Defense Fund.

The fact that 'American Idol' has the ability to inspire millions, create hope and change lives is simply remarkable, said Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller in a statement. We are extremely thankful to our viewers, sponsors and outstanding talent who continue to motivate each and every one of us to contribute to those who need it the most. The first-ever "Idol Gives Back" fund-raiser from last year provided over $75 million to select charities.

The eighth season of American Idol will premiere on January 13. Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul will return as judges for the show. It is unknown at this time whether the new season will feature a third fund-raising event.
