“Idol Gives Back” raises over $64 million.
The second “Idol Gives Back” fund-raising episode of ratings powerhouse American Idol received grants of over $64 million that will be donated to six charities in the U.S. and internationally, due to the overwhelming amount of donations made by viewers.
The Associated Press reports that the grants are to be given to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; Malaria No More; Children’s Defense Fund; Children’s Health Fund; Save the Children programs in the U.S.; and Make It Right, Brad Pitt’s New Orleans recovery charity.
Pitt appeared at the event, which aired in April on FOX. Other stars who attended included Reese Witherspoon, Robin Williams, and Billy Crystal. Performers were Miley Cyrus, Snoop Dogg, Heart, and Fergie.
Simon Fuller, creator and executive producer of American Idol, said in a statement, “The fact that ‘American Idol’ has the ability to inspire millions, create hope and change lives is simply remarkable. We are extremely thankful to our viewers, sponsors and outstanding talent who continue to motivate each and every one of us to contribute to those who need it most.”
The first “Idol Gives Back” that aired last year raised over $75 million for charities. The AP also reports that there is not yet word if there will be a third “Idol Gives Back” during the eighth season of American Idol, scheduled to premiere on January 13.
