“Days of Our Lives” Gets Weak Pickup
13-Nov-2008
Written by: E. Van Dril
NBC has renewed the show.
NBC has signed a deal with Sony Pictures TV to bring another season of Days of Our Lives to midday TV. But the bad news for fans of the show is that the network's renewal is just for 18 months.
This may seem like a positive announcement, in comparison to the plight of prime-time TV shows, but the previous renewal between the two parties was for five years.
And the reason, as it is for most cuts in America today, is the flailing economy.
At this moment, Days will be on the air through September 2010, but then if the show meets a set of criteria, it will stay on the air for another year.
Soap operas have been crushed by the economy and writers' strike. NBC has moved away from many. It recently moved Passions to DirecTV before cancelling it all together.
The renewal comes days after NBC Universal boss Jeff Zucker hinted that Days of Our Lives might not be renewed at all.
The reason is a combination of the high amounts of money it costs per week to produce the show - $1.7 million - $1.8 million - and the poor ratings. Among the show's targeted demographic, women 18-49, Days is third in the daytime.
So don't expect it to be around for much longer, in soap opera time.
