Grey’s Anatomy Episode 8 - These Ties That Bind
13-Nov-2008
Written by: Michael Pascua

Two new faces show up at the hospital. How will they affect the others?

In the middle of the night, Izzie sneaks a sniff of Denny’s sweater. Callie lays in bed by herself and longs for Erica. Cristina comes in to Meredith and Derek’s room. She mentions that Erica (the Wicked Witch) left. There is a knock on the door and Meredith’s friend, Sadie, shows up. Cristina is a little jealous. She pretends to laugh with them. Downstairs at the kitchen, Cristina and Derek complain about the new girl.

The four walk (along with Alex) into the hospital’s front door. Sadie apparently showed up since she was tired of working at a morgue. Alex bumps into Izzie and wants her to move on. She doesn’t talk to him so he gives her a kiss and walks in. As she walks in, the spirit of Denny continues to follow her.

Lexie tries to cover up her arm from Cristina. Alex is informed that there is a Virginia Dixon coming in to do some heart surgery. Derek wants to know about “Death and Die,” the nickname that Sadie mentioned before. Cristina mentions Lexie, and Derek wants Meredith to be concerned about her sister.

In front of the emergency door, Owen helps tie Cristina’s scrub. Callie comes in and Cristina asks about Erica. She doesn’t say anything. The person comes in looking like a pretzel. The doctors assume that the guy was in a dumpster and may have gotten crushed in. Mark and Derek show up for Owen’s help.

The chief preps Bailey for the new surgeon. He warns her that she may be a little “crazy.” Izzie walks in with the information (still sees Denny). Virginia shows up and is a little too introverted and “off.”

Cristina tries to shield Sadie from getting too involved. They decide to hold the guy and unfold him. As they pull him out, the man wakes up and yells. Owen tries to get morphine into the guy’s system. The guy screams and everyone lets go. The man is Timothy Miller. He’s worried about walking.

Virginia and Bailey start talking, but she gives another textbook response about heart surgery. Alex tries to prep her, but is called out when he uses the term “piggy back.” There is a Navajo patient who sees ghosts, in a similar way that Izzie sees. He doesn’t want the heart. Virginia walks in and lays it out.

Lexie practices sewing up one of the other interns, George walks in with some requests. The interns all cover up and kick George out.

The pretzel man explains his daily walking about since he’s homeless. He wants to refuse the surgery because he wants to walk. Owen tells the rest of the patients to leave and he walks out.

Izzie has to explain the Navajo patient’s circumstance since she understands it. He wants the heart back because of Navajo Rituals. Virginia has a problem with this because she is very black and white with her ideas.

Derek and Mark complain to Owen that they don’t leave a patient behind. Owen walks away angry and Derek tells Callie to find a way to do research on legs. Callie explains to Mark the options that she has; it’s like a complicated puzzle. Mark suggests a brand new leg. Sadie calls it Lincoln Logs and after Callie agrees, she sends the others to get titanium.

Bailey talks to the Chief about religious rules. The Chief thinks that it’s common courtesy and Bailey explains that Dr. Dixon doesn’t like it because it’s not a rule.

Cristina tries to talk to Dr. Dixon and quickly gets rejected. She storms into the room asking Mark and Callie about Dr. Hahn. Callie mentions that they had a fight and Cristina only realizes then that Callie was in a relationship. Cristina attempts to comfort her but Mark cuts her off.

Meredith talks to Derek and Derek points out that Lexie was nearby. She talks to Lexie about situations; she thinks that Lexie is a cutter. Mark cuts them off about the titanium leg.

Owen talks to the homeless patient. It turns out that everyone has a story. The homeless person’s story was that he took an unsuccessful turn in his life.

Lexie talks to the interns about taking fewer risks. Sadie calls out that the people won’t learn anything from stitching their arms. She decides to cut a part of her back and asks if any of the interns want to stitch her up.

Derek talks to Meredith to tell Mark to step away from Lexie. Callie is standing at one of the surgery boards and is upset. Mark tries to comfort her. Mark tells her that she looks great. She smiles and walks away.

Izzie talks to the Navajo patient about the nine day ghost removal ritual. She is curious about the whole ghost thing. He requests that she doesn’t take part with the surgery because he is already followed by ghosts.

Owen and Derek talk to the patient about how the homeless man is losing blood. Owen knows that he’s a fighter and is smart. Refusing a surgery is not smart.

The Navajo patient undergoes surgery with Bailey, Dr. Dixon, and Alex. Bailey tries to explain the new rule that was implemented. She is easily swayed over and goes back to work. Upstairs in the watching room, Izzie is confronted by Denny, but she tries her best to ignore him. They talk about how Izzie just wanted to see him again. Denny tells her that he’s real and wants her to touch him. She refuses.

The heart is removed, but there is a problem, the man’s original heart is beating by itself. Dr. Dixon is thrown for a loop since this doesn’t happen in textbooks.

Over at the homeless man’s surgery, many of the surgeons are trying to work on his body. Mark compliments Lexie for the stitching that she’s done.

The Navajo man is complimented for his heart recovery. He points out to Virginia that she has science as a belief.

The Chief comes on and compliments Lexie’s stitching, but Cristina gets some compliments for being her resident. The guy starts to crash.

Izzie talks to the Navajo man and he explains that he has to, as part of the ceremony they have, burn all the possessions, including fabrics. (Metals and the like get cleansed).

The homeless man dies. And Callie is upset, but Derek tries to comfort her. She gets upset because she made the bones. Cristina suggests to Owen to clear everyone else out. Everyone leaves. Callie cries on Mark’s shoulder.

Bailey compliments Dr. Dixon while they go to the elevator. She talks about how the heart has rules and how much she likes it. It turns out that Dr. Dixon starts out that she has Asperger's syndrome but doesn’t like how she doesn’t like the hospital because she was being condescending.

Mark and Derek talk a little about Lexie. He made sure that “Little Sloan” doesn’t get in “Little Grey.”

Izzie confronts Denny. She gives a goodbye speech so that his soul could go to peace. She finally gives her goodbye, walks away and Alex sees it.

Cristina rips off the bandages on Lexie’s arm and tells her to shut down the practicing.

Alex talks to Izzie in her room. He sees her and tells her that he can help. Izzie asks him to burn the sweater.

Cristina, Callie, and Mark talk a little more while sitting at a table in the bar. Cristina is still looking at Owen who is at the bar.

Derek tries to ask Meredith about the “Death and Die” story and he tells her that he stood up for her. Meredith caves and tells him the story.

Cristina runs to Owen. She tries to comfort him, he at first gets angry, but then instead they share a passionate kiss. Cristina walks away.

Alex stabs the sweater with a poker as Izzie watches, she gets back into her room and sees Denny. Denny tries to comfort her, but she is in tears. She turns to him and tries to touch him. She actually feels him and he proves to her that he is real. They share a passionate kiss.
