Wanda Sykes Says She’s “Proud to Be Gay”

The comedian came out over the weekend during nationwide protests against Proposition 8, which amended California’s constitution to ban gay marriages.
At a Las Vegas rally protesting the passage of Proposition 8 in California, over the weekend, comedian Wanda Sykes came out of the closet while speaking out against the state’s constitutional amendment, according to People magazine.
"I'm proud to be a black woman, and I'm proud to be gay," Sykes said Saturday.
Sykes married her girlfriend on Oct. 25, less than two weeks before the vote to ban gay marriage in California. The ban has nullified existing gay marriages in the state.
"[By electing Barack Obama] we took a huge leap forward and then got dragged about 12 steps back. Our community was attacked," Sykes said.
The rally Sykes participated in was one of dozens of protests that took place on Saturday across the nation to protest Proposition 8. Protestors claim the proposition discriminates against civil rights to marry others, regardless of sexual orientation.
"If we had equal rights, we shouldn't have to be standing out here demanding something that we automatically should have as citizens of this country," Sykes said. "I said, 'You know what, now I gotta get in your face.' And that's what we have to do now. They have pissed off the wrong group of people!"
Sykes has stayed quiet about her sexual orientation in the past and said she doesn’t talk a lot about her personal life but just lives her life.
