The “24” star discusses the lack of privacy or freedom in prison after serving a seven week sentence for DUI.
In the latest issue of Men’s Vogue, actor Keifer Sutherland opens up about the lack of freedom or privacy during his seven-week stint in lockup for a DUI earlier this year, according to People magazine.
"There's no smoking," the 41-year-old actor told Men’s Vogue. "The lights never go out, 24/7. You can't cover anything. You can't even put your head under a blanket. All the cells have cameras in them."
As for vices such as drinking and smoking, Sutherland said it was easy to quit while he was locked up, and he is hopeful that he will be able to quit smoking entirely in the future.
"My drinking was not a daily thing, so it wasn't an issue. And, oddly enough, neither was the smoking," Sutherland said. "I was very glad to know that I could quit. And one day soon I will."
Sutherland said the cellmate situation was switched on him after the actor was informed that he would have a cell to himself.
"I was told, you know, 'You'll have your own cell.' But I didn't for the first two or three weeks; I had a cellmate," Sutherland said. "He got out – but not for long. He came back in pretty quick."
Sutherland, who starred in films such as Lost Boys and Mirrors, currently stars in the Fox drama, 24. The new season begins on Nov. 23.
