Marissa Jaret Winokur Returns to “Hairspray”
19-Nov-2008

Original Tracy Turnblad to close show.
Marissa Jaret Winokur will put her Tracy Turnblad wig back on and reprise her Tony winning role when she joins Hairspray again in its final weeks on Broadway, the Associated Press reports.
Winokur, most recently seen on last season’s Dancing with the Stars, will start on Dec. 9 and stay until the hit show closes on Jan. 4. She will join fellow Tony winner Harvey Fierstein, who came back to the show to play mother Edna Turnblad.
Hairspray is about a full-figured teen girl who wants to appear on a dance show in 1960s Baltimore and deals with the issues of young love and segregation. The show opened to rave reviews when it opened in August 2002 and announced its closing only a few weeks ago.
It’s based on the John Waters film that starred drag queen Divine as Edna and a young Ricki Lake as Tracy. The film to this day remains a cult classic. It was recently re-made as a movie musical starring John Travolta in drag as Edna and newcomer Nikki Blonsky as Tracy, as well as Zac Efron playing Tracy’s love interest, Link Larkin. The film was a box office success.
Hairspray is playing at the Neil Simon Theatre.
