A Possible Breakthrough in Stem Cell Research

There has been a recent revelation in stem cell research.

There has been a recent revelation in stem cell research. The New York Times’ writer Alan Cowell is reporting, “Four European universities have completed what they say is the first successful transplant of a human windpipe using a patient’s own stem cells to fashion an organ and prevent its rejection by her immune system.” A patient by the name of Claudia Castillo was recovering from tuberculosis, and one of her symptoms was shortness of breath. Her tuberculosis prevented her from walking for a prolonged period of time, and she also had a damaged windpipe.

The procedure was done by the doctors removing a section of trachea from a donor who was already deceased. After that, donor cells were taken out from the trachea. Concurrently, Castillo had her stem cells taken out from her very own bone marrow. These stem cells were grown into a “large population and used to seed the donated windpipe.” Soon afterwards, a graft was planted to take the place of the patient’s deteriorating windpipe. This is the sort of breakthrough that might pave the way for many cures in various other places in the world.
