Franco to Play Allen Ginsberg
20-Nov-2008

The recent UCLA grad will portray the famous beatnik poet.
James Franco will play Allen Ginsberg in the upcoming film, Howl, which follows the 1957 obscenity trial over Ginsberg’s most famous poem.
“Ginsberg has been one of my heroes, and this movie is just so important,” Franco told the New York Daily News.
This will also mark Franco’s second gay role in a row. His portrayal of Scott Smith, longtime partner of California’s first openly gay elected official, Harvey Milk, can be seen in Gus Van Sant’s Milk, in select theaters November 26.
Since his breakup with actress Marla Sokoloff a few years ago, Franco’s sexuality has become a matter of intense scrutiny among his fans. But Franco says the consecutive gay roles “don’t make any difference” to him.
Franco will portray Ginsberg – recently played by David Cross in 2007’s I’m Not There – as a younger man in his late 20s and fresh out of Columbia, where Franco is currently working towards a masters degree in creative writing. He graduated from UCLA earlier this year.
