CW Network Trashes Sunday Lineup
21-Nov-2008
Written by: Mic Mell

CW is scrapping its Sunday lineup and starting over again.

The CW Network, home of shows like Gossip Girl, is making a bold move on its Sunday Night lineup: it's trashing all the programs. Sunday night is one of the most watched evenings of the television week, and CW has been flailing since they began the current slate of programs. John Matta, the COO of CW, sent a letter to all affiliates carrying CW programming, saying, “We have made a business and programming decision to protect our network and your local interests on Sunday for the remainder of the season,” and the schedule is “simply not working.”

As of November 30, the Sunday night schedule will consist of major motion pictures, The Drew Carey Show, and the syndicated CBS drama, Jericho. Matta's statement said, “Our plan is to program Sunday with distinctive, first-rate programming that can quickly stabilize the night.” The Sunday lineup had been administrated by Media Rights Capital, and some of the ratings were too low to be measured by Nielsen. In the wake of the announcement, a spokesperson for MRC insisted that both parties “are continuing to negotiate the Sunday night deal, all parts of the deal. . . .”

The CW Network is a partnership between CBS and Warner Brothers, and they had sold their Sunday slot to MRC. While the experiment was a failure, many insiders suggest that the idea of selling blocks of time to outside programming companies may become a popular trend.
