Mamet’s “American Buffalo” May Be Cancelled
22-Nov-2008

Playwright’s production does poorly at box office.
Perhaps it is the recession or David Mamet’s complex, word-music writing, that is making the revival of his 1975 play, American Buffalo, struggle at the box office.
Starring an eclectic cast of Cedric the Entertainer, Haley Joel Osment, and John Leguizamo, the production opened Nov. 17 on Broadway at the Belasco Theater, reports AP.
American Buffalo, which focuses on the themes of male friendship and revenge, tells of three crooks who botch up a robbery (N.Y. Times). Despite its talented cast, Newsweek reports the show to be sluggish and muffled, with unrealistic dialogue that borders more on poetry. As a result, more demands are placed on the actors as they try to portray the story in a way audiences can understand and enjoy.
Unless ticket sales soar over the weekend, “the production team will decide on Monday whether or not the show will close,” spokesman Richard Kornberg said.
