The much-anticipated vampire flick blows away box office competition.
Twilight grossed $35.7 million on Friday, making it the second biggest non-summer opening day gross after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
The numbers also include $7 million from the Thursday midnight shows.
This high gross convinced Summit Entertainment to green-light a sequel and has put director Catherine Hardwicke on the way to earning the biggest opening gross in history for a female director, according to Variety.com.
The vampire movie beat out the new 3-D cartoon, Bolt, which pulled in an estimated $7 million, and the latest Bond film, Quantum of Solace, which grossed an estimated $8.3 to $8.5 million in its second week.
Stephenie Meyer’s four-part book series, on which the movie is based, has sold 17 million copies nationwide.
Twilight stars Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson and is expected to exceed its predicted $60 million plus weekend gross, according to Entertainment Weekly.com. It has received mixed critical reception.
