John Forte Pardoned
John Forte was one of 14 people pardoned yesterday by President Bush. Forte is better known for being a rapper and producer of the group, the Fugees. Before his pardon, he was serving a sentence of 14 years since 2001.
According to an article from MTV.com, the 14 people pardoned had offenses ranging from mail fraud to the distribution of marijuana. Forte was arrested in 2000 in Newark International Airport. He was found guilty of possession of 31 pounds of liquid cocaine with the intent to distribute. Well-known singer Carly Simon came to his defense arguing that he did not receive a fair trial. She has been trying to lobby a number of politicians to help Forte's cause.
Forte helped write and produce two songs from The Fugees' album, The Score: "Family Business" and "Cowboys." He also produced two solo albums, Poly Sci in 1998 and I, John in 2002.
Any presidential pardon cannot be overruled. President Bush has issued 171 presidential pardons during his term. Forte will leave federal prison next month.
