Mel Gibson in Court
28-Nov-2008
Written by: Amy Chandler
“The Passion of the Christ” screenwriter claims he was cheated.
A Los Angeles judge has ordered Mel Gibson to attend a deposition in response to a screenwriter’s lawsuit, reported E! Online. Benedict Fitzgerald, screenwriter for The Passion of the Christ, claims that he was underpaid for his work on the film. Fitzgerald claimed he was cheated out of $10 million after Gibson tricked the writer into accepting a lower than normal fee, insisting the movie was a low budget, independent film. According to the Associated Press, Fitzgerald’s lawyers have also accused Gibson of spending thousands of dollars on his children’s education and paying a chiropractor $78,000, charging the expenses to the film’s production. The actor claimed to not know about how the money was handled, saying his production company’s accountant handled the money.
According to E! Online, Gibson is attempting to keep this feud out of the public by only allowing the lawyers to go over the reports. He also said that he is very busy shooting the movie, Edge of Darkness, and that it is hard to find time to attend the deposition. “Production would be severely disrupted if I had to miss a day or more of shooting,” the Oscar winner stated.
