The global landmark will visually mourn its designer, Joern Utzon.

The Sydney Opera House will be paying homage to its creator, Dutch architect Joern Utzon, by darkening its globally known white sails, Sunday, in a show of mourning, reports the Associated Press.

Following Utzon's death, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd issued a statement highly praising his work.

"Joern Utzon was a visionary architect whose legacy includes one of the world's most spectacular and inspiring buildings, the Sydney Opera House."

Rudd went on to call Utzon one of Australia's own.

"In the great sweep of history, what we're left with is a beautiful building, Sydney's symbol to the world, Australia's symbol to the world and owed in large part to this great man - a son of Denmark but I've got to say in terms of his spirit, a son of Australia as well."

According to the Sydney Opera House trust, the flood lights that shine on the building will be dimmed for one hour, Sunday.

The New South Wales state government announced that Flags on Sydney Harbor Bridge would be lowered Monday to half-staff also to pay respect to Utzon.

Reportedly, Kim Utzon told the Associated Press that his father died in his sleep of a heart attack, early Saturday in Denmark, surrounded by family.
