Slumdog Millionaire Triumphs at the British Independent Film Awards
Slumdog Millionaire was the big winner at the British Independent Film Awards on Sunday, held at the Old Billingsgate Market. The critically acclaimed film, which tells the story of an Indian teen who becomes a game show contestant, walked away with Best British Independent Film, Best Director and Most Promising Newcomer for its star, Dev Patel.
"It'll be very nice to text all the people we worked with in Mumbai and give them something to smile about in the morning," director Danny Boyle told Empire. "[The city] has a spirit that this film celebrates and despite what's happened, it's a city that's moving towards happiness."
Also claiming distinction was Hunger, which won Best Debut Director for Steve McQueen, Best Technical Achievement and Best Actor for Michael Fassbender.
Among the other award recipients were Vera Farmiga, who won Best Actress for The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Alexis Zegerman and Eddie Marsan, who took the supporting categories for their performances in Happy-Go-Lucky.
