Police Become Confident over Arrest in the Hudson Slayings
2-Dec-2008
Written by: Daniel A. Russ
Chicago police today became confident that Balfour is the slayer of Jennifer Hudson’s family.
It appears that as of Tuesday, police are confident that their arrest of William Balfour will lead to the conviction for the murders of Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew.
“You can never always know how a jury will decide a case but I'm confident the evidence is there and I'm confident we'll be successful,” Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said.
In addition to the murder weapon, the police were confident of their decision also because they have the testimony of someone close to Balfour that is willing to testify in court. Balfour is the estranged husband of Julia Hudson, Jennifer's sister.
The police say that the motive for the slayings stemmed from a dispute between Balfour and Julia Hudson.
Among the dead found were Hudson's mother, Darnell Donerson, 57, her brother, Jason Hudson, 29, and Julian King, Julia's son, whom was found four days later in a separate location. The murder weapon was located with the body of Julian King.
Balfour was also charged with home invasion.
One of the people that will be testifying against Balfour is one of his girlfriends, although Balfour's mother, Michelle Balfour – who has protested the innocence of her son – says that police are overly relying on her testimony, and that it shouldn't be trusted because she is facing a drug charge.
“They got a botched-up investigation,” she said, adding that Balfour loved Hudson's mother, Donerson, more than he loved Julia. “But I'm still his mother.”
Weis said no deals were made in exchange for witness statements implicating Balfour, who has been held on a parole violation since the slayings.
