Avery Apologizes for Dissing Cuthbert

Hockey player Sean Avery apologized for calling ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert “sloppy seconds.”
After being indefinitely suspended from the NHL for derogatory comments made about his ex-girlfriend and another player, Dallas Stars player Sean Avery apologized for calling his ex “sloppy seconds,” according to People magazine.
"I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate," Avery said in a statement. "It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were."
Avery was suspended Tuesday after making derogatory comments about his ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert, and Calgary Flames player Dion Phaneuf, to the media during a practice session.
"It’s a common thing for NHL guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds," Avery told reporters, though he did not mention Cuthbert or Phaneuf by name.
On Thursday, the 28-year-old has a hearing with the hockey league’s commissioner for making "inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game."
Avery said he understands his comments crossed the line.
"I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past," Avery said. "As many of you know, I like to mix it up on and off the ice from time to time, but understand that this time I took it too far."
