Lil Wayne, Coldplay Lead Grammy Nods
4-Dec-2008
Written by: Marissa Willman

Rapper Lil Wayne and alternative rock band Coldplay scored big when the Grammy nominations were released earlier this week, scoring 8 and 7, respectively.

This week’s release of the Grammy award nominees revealed that rapper Lil Wayne received eight nominations, while alternative rock band Coldplay picked up seven nominations, according to the Associated Press.

Lil Wayne is nominated for album of the year for his best-selling album, Tha Carter III. His album was the only one to sell more than a million copies within a week of release this year. The rapper was nominated for several awards in 2007 but did not take home any awards.

Coldplay was nominated for Record of the Year for their song, “Viva la Vida,” and were also nominated for album of the year.

Other nominees include Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Ne-Yo and M.I.A.

Country crooner Taylor Swift and Disney sensation Miley Cyrus received no nominations. Another surprising omission was songstress Katy Perry, whose hit, “I Kissed a Girl,” dominated airwaves for months. Perry was nominated for female pop vocal performance.

Metallica, who released their comeback album, Death Magnetic, earlier this year, received three nods but did not receive a nomination for Album of the Year.

The Grammy Awards will be broadcasted live on CBS on Feb. 8. Last year’s awards show, which drew only 17.2 million viewers, was the least watched in the show’s history.
