It appears that The Golden Compass director, Chris Weitz, is set to helm New Moon, the follow-up to the high-grossing vampire love story, Twilight.
Though the deal is not official, and Summit Entertainment says it has not yet signed Weitz, multiple sources told Entertainment Weekly that Weitz is the definite pick. They also reported that Summit has halted negotiations with other possible directors.
It was announced earlier this week that Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke would not return for the sequel. Hardwicke reportedly clashed with Summit during production.
Weitz directed and produced American Pie with his brother, Paul. The siblings were also nominated for an Academy Award for best screenplay for the Hugh Grant film, About a Boy, which they co-directed.
Summit is expected to announce its hiring decision on Sunday, and could potentially have Weitz in Canada the very next day to begin pre-production.
