Superheroes, robots and a suave secret agent grace the list.

Unsurprisingly, The Dark Knight was the box office champ of 2008, pulling in $996.8 million worldwide - a sum which may increase when the record-breaking film is re-released in January. The rest of the top 15 highest-grossing movies of the year, according to Variety, featured a mix of action movies, animated flicks and even one musical.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull claimed second place with a $786.6 million worldwide gross, despite backlash over some subplots and its CGI elements. Kung Fu Panda, Hancock and Iron Man rounded out the top five, with $631.9 million, $624.4 million and $581.9 million, respectively.

The Meryl Streep musical, Mamma Mia!, was the No. 6 box office performer, claiming $572.1 million. Next was the $534.5 million-making Bond installment, Quantum of Solace, followed by Pixar's WALL-E, which pulled in $507.3 million. Two summer hits, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ($419.6 million) and Sex and the City ($415.1 million), took the No. 9 and No. 10 spots.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Wanted, Horton Hears a Who! and 10,000 B.C. completed the top 15, with sums ranging from $397.2 million to $269.1 million.
