Twitter Madness
5-Jan-2009
Written by: Edgar Acero
Celebrities and other popular figures are being picked on by anonymous hackers through the popular microblogging service, Twitter. Through silly and controversial messages, these anonymous individuals are voicing their opinions through their online victims.
The latest hacked accounts include those of Fox News, Britney Spears, and CNN anchor Rick Sanchez.
Reports of a phishing scam rounding the site stealing passwords started appearing over the weekend. Even though Twitter warned members of a fake log-in page, people still fell for the scam as the fake log-in screen’s design was almost identical to the real one.
As the hackers tackled the site, they focused on the most recognized users and attacked. On the official Rick Sanchez Twitter account, a “tweet” read, “I am high on crack right now might not be coming into work today.” The entry has been deleted and Sanchez has explained the situation through a new post.
Fox News’ account was also hacked with a post making reference to Bill O’Reilly’s sexual orientation, and Spears’s account featured a tasteless private claim. Although people on Spears’s staff have access to her account, it is strongly believed that the “tweet” was written by a hacker.
All the unwanted and offensive messages have been taken off the Web.
