Homeland Securty: The TV Show
6-Jan-2009
Written by: Mic Mell
The department is going on TV, as a reality show.
Department of Homeland Security — four words that bring to mind anything from border patrols to brown shirts. Most of us know very little about the branch of government charged with protecting us domestically, and a new reality TV show is giving us a behind-the-scenes look at the organization.
The show is working hard to be apolitical, and has the tone of a documentary, giving us an inside look at various places and jobs taken on by the DHS. All the segments are approved by DHS, so we won't know how much of it is censored. The show seems to focus on the effectiveness of the organization, and avoids any content that might show the limitations or holes in the organization. The reviews almost all seem to suggest the program is part propaganda and part recruitment video.
Reuters calls the show "mundane," saying that the subject matter isn't too compelling. The article says, "It's interesting and agreeably voyeuristic, but by the end of the 13 ordered episodes, it's likely we'll have pretty much had it with studying passports and marijuana bricks."
The producer of the show is the same man who brought us Rescue 911 and Big Brother, Arnold Shapiro.
