6-Jan-2009
Written by: Edgar Acero
Ron Asheton, the Stooges guitarist, was found dead on Tuesday by local police in his Ann Arbor, Michigan home. He was 60.
According to Billboard.com, police were called early in the morning by Dara Hytinen, Asheton’s personal assistant. She had been trying to reach him for days but was unable to do so.
Asheton’s lifeless body was found in his bedroom with no signs of struggle or drug usage. According to detective Bill Stanford, the performer looked “fairly peaceful” and is believed to have been dead since New Year’s Day.
An autopsy will be conducted at the University of Michigan in order to figure out the cause of death. However, the results won’t be available for about a month, which is the time that toxicology reports take to come out.
Asheton was the original guitarist of the Stooges and formed the band with his brother, Scott Asheton, lead singer Iggy Pop, and bassist Dave Alexander, in 1967.
The band is currently nominated for this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The inductees will be announced later this month.
