“Iggy Pop and the Stooges” Guitarist Dies
6-Jan-2009

Ron Asheton will forever be missed by his bandmates.
Ron Asheton, age 60, was found dead Tuesday morning in his home in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Asheton could have possibly died several days ago though, the Ann Arbor News reports. Asheton’s assistant had been trying to get a hold of the guitarist for several days. Unable to, he was prompted to notify police. When police broke into Asheton’s home, they found him dead on the living room couch.
The results of an autopsy have not yet been released, but detectives suspect that the death was the result of a heart attack.
Asheton was one of the original members of Ann Arbor based band “The Stooges,” the early punk group led by front man Iggy Pop. The band was well known for its sometimes unruly stage antics; including spitting on fans and diving into the audience to start mosh-pits.
A statement released by Iggy Pop and the remaining band members, Scott Asheton, Steve Mackay, and Mike Watt reads, “We are shocked and shaken by the news of Ron’s death. He was a great friend, brother, musician, trooper. Irreplaceable. He will be missed.”
Asheton was named number 29 of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time by Rolling Stone magazine. The Stooges were also recently nominated to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in September.
