No More Converter Box Coupons
6-Jan-2009
Written by: Kevin Krizmanich
The government sponsored program to provide cheaper digital conversion for America’s TV watchers is out of money.
As the date that all television broadcast companies will be switching to digital-broadcasting-only quickly draws close, people are struggling to find the converter box that will make their older analog TVs continue to work.
The government program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Commerce has reported that it will not be handing out any more of the $40 converter box coupons, at least for now. People that call the provided number merely get put on a waiting list, with no date given as to when they can expect to receive their coupon.
Unless given more money by Congress, the Department of Commerce can only wait for the 90-day expiration date to be up on the coupons that haven’t yet been redeemed, and only then can they put the money back into the program and issue new ones.
More than 41 million coupons have been mailed out so far. With 130 thousand people still on the waiting list, it is not likely that if someone was to call today, they would receive their coupon by the February 17 switch.
