Penn Roasts Brolin
7-Jan-2009
Written by: Alistair Dickinson
“Milk” actor Sean Penn poked fun at costar Josh Brolin’s mid-life success story during the New York Film Critics Circle Awards, Monday.
In their new film, Milk, a biopic of gay rights activist Harvey Milk (currently riding a wave of Oscar-buzz), actors Sean Penn and Josh Brolin play political rivals engaged in a feud that has tragic results for them both.
In real life, however, any antagonism between the two is purely in good fun. According to the New York Daily News, Penn roasted Brolin while presenting him with the Best Supporting Actor award at the annual New York Film Critics Circle Awards this Monday. "I'm sorry it took until your 40s for you to be recognized," he ribbed Brolin. "I wrote [Brolin] off as I do all square-jawed actors."
Brolin got his revenge, however, during his acceptance speech. "We've all known Sean as an actor who doesn't smile very much. Sean . . . you're going to win an Oscar [for Milk]. Just because you smiled so much."
Brolin, son of actor James Brolin and stepson of actress and singer Barbra Streisand, has been acting since 1985, but has gained a much higher profile in recent years due to critically acclaimed roles in films like American Gangster, No Country for Old Men, W. and the aforementioned Milk.
