Fasion Week in New York with No Fashion
7-Jan-2009
Written by: Elizabeth Carey
With only a month to go, more and more designers are dropping out of the week under the tents and opting for a more intimate, but moreover, economically sound, exhibition of their Fall 2009 lines.
The biannual runway shows at Bryant Park are arguably the two biggest events in fashion worldwide. However, it seems the new trend in fashion this spring has become to show no fashion at all.
With the looming week of shows under the tents at Bryant Park this February, more and more designers are starting to bail out and opting for a more “intimate” display of their lines. According to the Wall Street Journal, popular designers such as Monique Lhuillier, Naeem Khan, Vera Wang, Betsey Johnson, Temperley London and Carmen Marc Valvo have all decided against staging runway shows for this more personalized exhibition of their lines.
Spokesperson Paul Wilmot, who represents Ms. Lhuillier, claimed, “We just wanted to do something different, shake things up a little bit – it’ll sell the clothes differently.” However, it could be inferred that this surge of typically popular designers dropping out is due to recent economic troubles. Shows at Bryant Park cost roughly $100,000 and these designers may simply not be able to afford it despite years of being normal participants.
