Taylor Swift Continues to Top the Charts amid Flaccid Sales
8-Jan-2009
Written by: Mic Mell

The singer is #1 on the Billboard charts by a long shot.

The good news is that for the last four weeks, Taylor Swift's album, Fearless, has been at the top of the Billboard charts. The bad news is that the total sold this week was 90,000 units, which amounts to a 66 percent drop from the previous week for the top selling album in the U.S.

In an industry which previously boasted six or seven figure sales numbers for #1 hits, this is a disconcerting trend, to say the least. A #1 hit hasn't sold less than 100,000 units in a week since early February 2008. The week of New Year's is known to be a slow sales week, and the results are grim even in that context. Nine of the top twenty albums saw a steep drop in sales.

Album sales continue to drop exponentially, and the first week of 2009 was 6 percent lower than the previous year, and 17 percent down from two years ago. While the first week of the year posted 8.5 million albums sold, the top 10 accounted for half of that.
