President-Elect Obama Teams Up with Spider-Man
9-Jan-2009
Written by: Jeffrey Harris

Spider-Man meets the next president in the pages of “Amazing Spider-Man.”

According to USA Today, Marvel Comics will release "Amazing Spider-Man" issue #583 on Jan. 14. The issue will depict a meeting between President-elect Barack Obama and the Marvel comics superhero, Spider-Man.

Obama will be depicted on the cover of the issue and also will "team-up" with Spider-Man for several pages. In the story, one of Spider-Man's villains, the Chameleon, attempts to thwart the inauguration of Obama as president.

In an Entertainment Weekly pop culture survey, Obama named Spider-Man and Batman as two of his favorite superheroes, while his 2008 presidential opponent, John McCain, named only Batman. According to Marvel Editor-In-Chief Joe Quesada, "We do our best to be completely non-partisan and treat presidents with respect. This is not so much a pro-Obama statement but a tip of the hat to having a Spider-Man fan in the White House." When asked if McCain would appear in a Spider-Man comic in similar fashion if McCain had become president, Quesada responded, "If McCain was a Spider-Man fan, I'm sure he would."
