Golden Globes Not As Popular This Year
The big comeback for the Golden Globes awards show drew a less-than-spectacular response from TV viewers.
According to Neilsen Media Research, the NBC awards show averaged 14.6 million viewers. This number is an inevitable improvement from the 6 million who watched last year's Golden Globes "show," which was hampered by a writers' strike and relegated to what MTV calls "a stripped down newscast."
However, despite the return of the glitz and glamour normally associated with the Golden Globes, the show could not match the ratings of two years ago, which Neilsen reported at 20 million viewers.
Blogger CBarney, from the San Jose Mercury News Web site, called this year's broadcast "bleep-filled," and suggests the show turned viewers away due to an excess of profanity and acceptance speeches both lewd and long-winded. "The Golden Globes have always been a very 'loose' gala, but maybe they need to cut back on the champagne," he writes.
