Bruce Springsteen: Guitar Hero
14-Jan-2009

The Boss is coming to the wildly popular video game.
Bruce Springsteen is finding himself in the spotlight, and it's as bright as it's ever been. He has a new album coming out, a Super Bowl appearance, and his music is soon to be available as downloadable additions to Guitar Hero: World Tour. Activision CEO Robert Kotick said, "Bruce Springsteen has been a defining force in Rock ‘n Roll and we are incredibly excited to have him make his video game debut with Guitar Hero World Tour."
January 27 is the day Springsteen's new album is released, and fans will be able to download a two song addition to Guitar Hero on the same day, for free, until February 4. The two song pack includes the classic, "Born to Run," and "My Lucky Day," a track from the new album (titled Working on a Dream).
Springsteen is following a trend that is becoming popular among bigger rock acts, releasing tracks for the Guitar Hero game series. Pearl Jam, Metallica, the Rolling Stones, and many other rock bands are finding new audiences and new life from the exposure the game provides. With even the Beatles signed on to have their music in video game land, it may not be long before Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and other classic rock bands join the fray, too.
The biggest question on people's minds is whether or not Guitar Hero and Rock Band promote or discourage the actual playing of music. While many guitar teachers report an upswing in the number of students from the games, the ease of rocking in a few minutes sure beats the thousands of hours of practice it takes to play an actual instrument. In an interview with the Freakonomics blog, Harmonix (maker of both Rock Band and the original Guitar Hero series) founder Alex Rigopulos said, "We don’t see Rock Band as an educational tool for guitar so much as an inspirational tool . . . by giving people a taste of what lies on the other side, we’re inspiring them to invest themselves in learning the instrument for real."
You can check out the official video for "My Lucky Day" from the new album here. And yes, it rocks.
