Slumdog Millionaire Not as Accepted Outside of U.S.

The residents of Mumbai, India are ambivalent about "Slumdog Millionaire," nominated for ten Academy Awards this week.

The story of an impoverished Mumbai teen that wins on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire has brought uneasy feelings to Indians, who say the film is just another stereotypical depiction of their country, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The Associated Press reports that the film was met with indifference after Friday's India release. This is the complete opposite of how the film was received in the U.S. It won four Golden Globes and is a front-runner for next month's Academy Awards.

The film focuses on poverty in Mumbai, a conflict all too real for its natives. Some Indian film critics claim that Slumdog Millionaire may be exploiting the city's poverty, according to United Press International.

The film will, however, survive in India as it continues to intrigue locals, who are curious to see how outsiders view their world. "There is still a fascination with seeing how we are perceived by white Westerners," a Mumbai film professor told the Los Angeles Times.
