Slumdog Snatches Yet Another Award
BBC News reports that British film director Danny Boyles's rags-to-riches tale, Slumdog Millionaire, has won top film prize from Hollywood's producers. The award helps put the film in a good position at the upcoming Oscars awards ceremony, having received ten nods, including best film.
The film has beaten off stiff competition from other nominees including Milk, The Dark Knight, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Frost/Nixon at the Producers Guild of America (PGA) ceremony.
Slumdog Millionaire swept up four Golden Globe Awards and, featuring a cast of unknowns, the film is tipped to be crowned best picture at the Academy Awards.
Reuters reports that the film is set to gain commercial momentum this weekend as it expands into U.S. release, playing in more than 1,000 theaters after earning such great Oscar recognition.
Reuters also reports that the film, distributed by Fox Searchlight, has grossed more than $48 million in North America and over $65 million to date, worldwide.
