Phelps Loses Sponsorship Deal with Kellogg

The Olympic swimmer has received heat from the companies that back him financially due to the photos that have recently surfaced.

Michael had to have known this was coming. . . .

Some of the companies that sponsor Michael Phelps, who won eight gold medals at last summer's Olympic games in Beijing, are withdrawing their sponsorships after an incriminating photograph of the swimmer surfaced this past week, according to the New York Times. The picture included Phelps at a University of Southern California party smoking from a large marijuana pipe, which he later confirmed was true.

On Thursday, Kellogg said that they would not renew their agreement with Phelps when it expires. Phelps had been featured on the front of the boxes for both Frosted Flakes and Corn Flakes. Susanne Norwitz, a representative of the cereal company, stated, "Michael's most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg."

USA Swimming has also suspended Phelps, and will not allow him to compete until May. They stated, "We decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and hero."

Not all the companies that Phelps receives money from have shunned him; both Speedo and Omega have accepted his public apology. Still, due to the circumstances, it seems kind of odd that the snack food company was the one who put the ban on him. . . .
