Spider-Man the Musical Hits 42nd Street

Spider-Man goes to Broadway in 2010.

The Marvel comic book hero is going to Broadway. "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" will be a musical based on the origins of the superhero's life. U2 members Bono and The Edge will contribute their music and lyrics for the new musical.

BBC News reported that the director of Disney's The Lion King, Julie Taymor, will be directing "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark."

The musical is reportedly the most expensive Broadway show in history costing $40 million. The Hilton Theatre is the only venue big enough to hold the production allowing Spider-Man to climb on top of the skyscraper set.

Newsday reported it will stay true to the Marvel comic books, taking "more than 40 years of Marvel comic's history for inspiration."

Daniel Ezralow (Taymor's "Across the Universe") has been chosen as choreographer while George Tsypin ("The Little Mermaid") will work as designer. Eiko Ishioka, whose work was part of the opening ceremony for the Beijing Olympics, will be the costume designer.

Casting for the musical has yet to be announced.

The musical opens in February 2010 while previews begin on Jan. 16, 2010.
