Girl Talk!

Important "ANTM" news may rock the modeling world.

The days of needing to be tall to compete on Tyra Banks's hit show, America's Next Top Model, are over! Well, for cycle 13 at least. The height requirement for cycle 13 is that all applicants must be 5'7" or under. Yes, you read that right.

Traditionally, models are extremely tall and skinny. So what's going to happen with the outcome of the "short cycle?" Is it a good idea? I asked people to weigh in (pun intended) on the matter.

None of the girls thought that having short girls compete was wrong. Cait, 21, said, "I think it's good that she's [Tyra] taking the show to the next level." Kendra, 24, said, "Since shorter applicants weren't allowed in seasons past, it's only fair that this season be only for shorter girls."

But there's another side to the argument. Kelly, 23, said, "It's just as unfair to restrict height to 5'7" or shorter as it is to restrict to 5'7" or taller. If the show were truly interested in opening up the competition to all people, they'd just let the applicants be any height." Shaina, 21, agrees. "This way, you're still discriminating, just against those who normally are the only ones who have a chance."

There's one other point of question – would a short girl get any modeling work post-ANTM? Ketrina, 18, said, "When designers are putting on a show, they mostly make just one size, and it's tall and thin. Designers aren't going to hire one short girl with a bunch of tall girls." But Andrea, 23, disagrees. "[Height] is nice because the clothing drapes better on someone with a little height to them, but it shouldn't take someone that's 5'11" and 115 pounds to make an article of clothing look nice."

So I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it works out. We'll have to wait a while, since cycle 12 is beginning March 4. But this short girl is definitely excited about it anyway!
