What will Yankee Fans Chant Now?
Boston Red Sox fans are about to have a serious identity crisis. As of Wednesday evening, their reputation of being underdogs since 1918 (held in the grip of the Curse of the Bambino) is no more.
Since Babe Ruth was traded from the Red Sox to the Yankees in 1919, it has been said that the curse kept the Sox from Series' victory. Well, in St. Louis at Busch Stadium in front of a crowd of more than 52,000 people Wednesday night, the Red Sox shut out the Cardinals 3-0 in a four game sweep and won the Series for the first time since 1918.
The victory over the Cardinals, who won over 100 games this season, came after the Red Sox out-pitched the Yankees when the Yankees were ahead by three games in the playoffs. The Sox then managed to win four in a row, entered the Series and kept their streak going until the curse was no more.
The dynamics have now shifted in Red Sox Nation. No longer will they hear chants of "1918" by Yankee fans, who have enjoyed 26 World Series' victories since the infamous date. The heart-stopping near-wins against the Yankees are long gone and Sox fans couldn't be happier. In fact, it took about six minutes after the Series ended for fans to swarm the streets and bars of Boston to join in chants of "Yankees suck!"
Looks like Yankee fans will have to come up with a new chant.
