Rare March Snow Blankets Southeast
An unseasonable March storm had blanketed much of the region in southeastern United States and was moving along the East Coast. The officials in the Northeast had already prepared for the wintery assault.
Reports from ABC News indicated that the snow started in the southern areas where people rarely see snow, even during the winter time. "We've had snow as far south as Montgomery, Alabama and while that's not unheard of, it is fairly unusual. This occurs once every couple of years in these areas," said AccuWeather meteorologist Jonathan Porter.
The icy blast soaring from the south had already forced hundreds of flights to be cancelled or delayed. Even some churches' services had to be cancelled due to the horrible storm.
The storm was expected to "drop up to a foot of snow in the Philadelphia area, 13 inches in New York and 15 inches across southern New England late Sunday," according to a report from the Associated Press.
Boston and Washington have declared snow emergencies. In New York, 1,300 sanitation workers have prepared to spread salt and plow streets.
