Sleepless in Seattle Goes Broadway

Romantic comedy to become musical in 2010.

One of the most famous romantic comedies is about to hit Broadway. The sappy 1993 Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks movie will become a musical in 2010, the New York Daily News reports.

The Nora Ephron film featured Ryan as a vaguely unhappy fiancee who falls in love with a widowed father after only having heard him on the radio. Their eventual first encounter on top of the Empire State Building has gone down in movie history.

Jeff Arch, who wrote the film's original story and co-wrote the Oscar-nominated screenplay, will write the musical's story. Producer David Shor is developing it through his entity, Sleepless in Seattle Management, LLC.

The production is going to be one of many musicals based on movies, which seems to be a recent Broadway craze. Current examples include the following:

Billy Elliott

The adaptation of a British film about a young working class boy, whose secret passion is ballet, has been on Broadway since October.

The Lion King

Disney's children's classic has been a Broadway favorite for more than a decade, and has spawned many international versions.

Shrek The Musical

DreamWorks´ groundbreaking animation movie is one of the latest transfers to Broadway, having premiered in December.

The Little Mermaid

Another Disney film become musical: The adventures of Ariel the Mermaid are on show at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre.

Mary Poppins

Magic nanny Mary Poppins has been on Broadway for over two years, performing all-time favorites like "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
