Local Children Celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday with the Cat in the Hat
On Tuesday, the Cat in the Hat paid a visit to more than 900 elementary students from the Bonne Community School District. The visit is one of the activities to celebrate Dr. Seuss' 105th birthday and the National Read across America week.
Theodor Seuss Geisel, known for his pen name, Dr. Seuss, was a promoter of elementary literacy in the United States. The featured character in his children's book was the Cat in the Hat. In order to address the importance of reading to elementary students, the Cat in the Hat appeared in the school yard, reading Dr. Seuss's stories to the students.
"My whole purpose today was to encourage children to read, read, read because that's the most important skill," said the Cat in the Hat.
The visit was welcomed by the children. "I like the cat," said Danville first-grader Catherine Bisbee. "I didn't get to see him last year." And the 7-year-old Corey Lemay said he was excited about the week, according to EagleTribune.com.
The Hampshire President Rhonda Wesolowski said reading is important for younger students and those who read well usually have higher IQs and better language skills.
