Big Love Breaks Boundaries

HBO apologizes for a depiction of a never-before-seen Mormon ceremony.

The HBO series, Big Love, gives viewers a sneak peak inside the lives of polygamists. It is a fictional drama, starring Bill Paxton and his three wives. Although they have broken away from the compound, they remain true to their faith and struggle with maintaining it in the "real world."

Big Love only has two episodes left this season and it appears they are going out with a bang. This Sunday's episode will feature an endowment ceremony, a religious ritual in which participants move to a higher level of understanding. HBO said on Tuesday that its writers have gone to great lengths to be "respectful and accurate" in their depiction of the ritual, reports Reuters.

According to Reuters, this will be the first time the ritual will be shown on TV. Needless to say, the Mormon church, officially known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), is not happy. They claim that the event is very sacred and should not be used for entertainment purposes.

HBO apologizes for offending any members of the Mormon faith but stands by their decision to air the episode.

"Certainly Church members are offended when their most sacred practices are misrepresented or presented without context or understanding," LDS said in a statement on Monday. LDS adds that they will not boycott because it would simply generate the kind of buzz the media loves, and boost ratings.

Since the inside of the Mormon temple is kept so secret, surely curiosity will draw audiences. Big Love airs Sunday on HBO.
